Muki Shoes Raw Leather Cloud – Review

Mukishoes Raw Leather Cloud – the leather version of the popular Cloud model gets an update in 2022. The softness of the new vegetable-tanned leather is just amazing. These shoes pamper you with freedom and minimalism, while their design perfectly hides the width and spaciousness they offer your feet inside.

My first review of the Raw Leather Cloud was published at the beginning of 2020, when the first version of this popular leather model was also released.

In 2022, there are some minor changes to the model, mainly concerning the change of the leather (the leather is whiter in colour, but also softer). I have therefore updated my review for 2022 and all descriptions and photos in this post refer to the new model.

Disclaimer: I bought the shoes myself and, as always, all the opinions expressed here are mine own. I’m also proud to be a Mukishoes affiliate and I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase using my discount code UNIVERSEMUKI (at no extra cost to you).

2. Material characteristics

2.1 Upper

The upper of the Mukishoes Raw Leather Cloud model is made of vegetable-tanned leather in white. The same leather was used in the Nimbus Play kids’ model that my daughter tested, so when I heard that the same leather had been chosen here, I was really excited. This leather has proven to be extremely durable, but at the same time it is buttery soft. It feels almost velvety to the touch. All in all, a truly unique leather.

The cotton laces are in matching white. In certain lighting conditions, the laces appear slightly whiter than leather, but this is not distracting to me at all.

The small decorative pull loops and the Mukishoes logo add a special charm and a little spice to the whiteness of the shoe.

2.2 Lining

The shoes are lined with a thin layer of organic cotton lining in aquamarine. The Mukishoes black logo is printed on the heel area inside the shoe.

2.3 Sole

The 3.5 mm thick sole is made of 100% natural rubber and is extremely flexible and soft. The ground feel is exceptional. The sole is also stitched to the upper for added durability.

The shoes are extremely light and flexible. You rarely find such softness in a leather shoe.

3. Sizing information

3.1 Length

The shoes are available in sizes 36-48 and are suitable for both men and women.

My feet are 26.3 cm long and 10 cm wide, which corresponds to a size 42, but I decided to try both a size 42 and a size 43 with this model because I was worried that the shoes would be too short for my size (the old model was shorter than the values in the chart).

After trying on both sizes, I found that they were both true to chart, given the space in the shoe, so in the end I decided to keep the size 42.

The shoes are therefore 11 mm longer than my foot. This length is perfectly adequate for sneakers, which I will wear in the warmer part of the year barefoot or with thinner socks.

See the post How much space do we need in shoes if you want to know more about that.

I also measured both sizes with a Plus12, but the shape of the heel can make the inside length more difficult to measure (at sole height, the inside length may be measured smaller than it actually is because the shape of the heel is curved, and the heel curvature cannot be taken into account by the Plus12 measure which I use).

If you also need a cork insole in your shoe, choose them in one size smaller than your shoes are (due to the curve of the heel).

In some cases, shoes can still appear shorter on the foot than they are, despite their real internal length. Shoes can appear shorter for two reasons:

  • the curvature of the heel cup may be greater than the curvature of your heel, so this means your foot sits a little further forward in the shoe, leading to a reduction in toe space (see image below left)
  • your foot is wider, so the foot in the shoe (due to the high softness of the sole) pushes the sole to sides and widen it (see picture below right) – the width of the shoe increases as a result, but at the same time the length of the shoe decreases (think of the circumference of the sole as a curve).

If you find yourself in one of the above two cases, please take this into account when choosing your size. I don’t notice either of these two peculiarities in my foot.

3.2. Toebox shape & width

Mukishoes have a milder slope towards the pinky toe, which is best suited to foot shapes 2, 4 and 5. They can also be worn by people with the longest big toe with a stronger slope towards the pinky toe (1), but in this case more space may be left in front of the smaller toes. Squarer foot shapes (3 and 6) will need more space in front of the smaller toes to allow room for the them too.

More about different foot types you can read in post What is my Foot Type?

The toebox shape and the width of Mukishoes shoes can vary slightly from model to model due to the use of different materials, so some models may appear wider, others narrower. Raw Leather Cloud is best suited for medium width feet. Due to the construction of the sole, they allow the sole to expand sideways, but you are always limited in width by the maximum circumference of the shoe too (the more width you need – the less volume the foot can have).

My foot is 10 cm wide (medium to wide) and the width of the shoes fits me well. In the case of thick socks, I would need more space in the width, but I always wear thinner socks in spring and summer, so this is not a problem for me.

For narrower feet with less volume, I recommend wearing an insole in the shoe, otherwise the shoe can feel too deep.

3.3. Fit around the instep, heel and ankle

The first generation of Mukishoes was definitely too deep for my feet, but that is far from the case with their new models. The new models adapt well to different heights of the instep and the shoes fit me perfectly. In the case of very shallow feet, I would still recommend using an insole, but please note that the insole also takes away some of the width.

A looser fit may be noticeable around narrow ankles, but is not distracting when walking. The shoes nevertheless grip my foot well.

4. Comfort

Raw Leather Cloud shoes are so light on your feet, you’ll forget you’re wearing anything at all. Natural materials are breathable, so your foot doesn’t feel encased in plastic like with PET materials.

The top edge around the ankles may feel a little firmer at first, but as the overall leather is much softer here, it didn’t cause me any problems this time. In case you feel any discomfort, I recommend wearing them with socks for the first few days.

5. How and when to wear them?

Thanks to their minimalist look, lightness and eternally fashionable white colour, the Mukishoes Raw Leather Cloud pair perfectly with many outfits – jeans, a summer dress, a skirt or even a business suit for a smart casual look.

8. To sum up

If you want to enjoy the feeling of lightness and spaciousness that barefoot shoes give you, wearing as natural and non-toxic materials as possible, while also doing something good for your feet and the environment, then Mukishoes is the shoe brand for you.

The Raw Leather Cloud is one of the lightest and softest leather shoes available, and it feels amazing to wear. Definitely one of my favourite recent purchases.
